Our Environmental Policy

Our mission at FEMA is to assure that we act with care in carrying out all our responsibilities, including disaster response, recovery, and hazard mitigation in a manner consistent with national environmental policies. Our policy is to use all practical means to protect, restore, and enhance the quality of the environment. We strive to avoid or minimize adverse environmental consequences during all of our activities.

The ultimate goal at FEMA is to "reduce loss of life and property and protect our nation's critical infrastructure from all types of hazards through a comprehensive, risk based, emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery."

For more in-depth information, here is an official policy statement about FEMA's environmental responsibilities from the Code of Federal Regulations.
