Chairman Powell's Visit to the
Children’s Developmental Services Agency
Wilmington, North Carolina
3/4/04
On March 4 2004, Chairman Powell toured the Children’s Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) of Wilmington where he saw a demonstration of this North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services facility’s use of the latest telemedicine applications to assist children with disabilities. The agency participates in TelAbility, which provides health care services via telemedicine to a specialist in Chapel Hill which spares Wilmington-area patients and their families the two-hour drive to the Chapel Hill medical center.
Chairman Powell has promoted telemedicine initiatives to bring millions of Americans from rural and remote areas closer than ever to top-quality doctors and medical specialists. In addition, he has noted that telemedicine networks can be integral to homeland security efforts by bringing health-care information rapidly to first responders in times of national crisis.
