Pitch pine is one of the few pine species capable of resprouting from root crown and stem, contributing to its dominance in frequently burned pinelands and barrens in the eastern United States. The other woody species in this community in the New Jersey Pinelands, such as bear oak and the heath species, are also capable of resprouting after fire.
