Overview

The Department of Energy (DOE) Information Bridge, developed and maintained by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), makes DOE scientific and technical information electronically available without charge.  The Information Bridge can be used to access, locate, search, and download the full-text reports detailing basic and applied scientific research in energy sciences and related areas.

When you use Information Bridge, you can search the collection of full-text and bibliographic data.  You can download or view the document in PDF or in the original electronic format, if it is available.  If a document is only referenced through a URL, there will not be individual images of the pages for viewing.  The only way you can access these documents will be to follow the link provided.

Information Bridge offers both "Easy Search" and "Advanced Search" options.  "Easy Search" is a quick, easy way to generally define items of interest.  This option is similar to what you find on many popular Internet search engines.  "Advanced Search" allows you to specifically define items of interest by using more sophisticated searching options. With "Advanced Search", you can combine numerous fields to more precisely describe what you want, use Boolean logic at two different levels of the search, and select from pick lists as your search is conducted.  The default search option lets you take advantage of a basic index of words.  The index is made up of the bibliographic data, abstracts, and words from any full-text that was run through Optical Character Resolution (OCR).

To get the full benefit of the technologies incorporated into Information Bridge, you need a 486/Pentium PC, MAC, or UNIX workstation capable of running an Internet Browser. You will also need, for optimal performance, either Netscape 4.08 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher to ensure all features work properly.  A PDF viewer and PDF plug-in is also suggested.  For more information, see Technical Requirements necessary for system functionality.
