About Evidence-based Cancer Control

The Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) is guided by the standards of evidence-based cancer control. Evidence-based cancer control is grounded on the fundamental principles for evidence-based clinical practice developed by Guyatt1 and Rosenberg and Donald2. Evidence-based cancer control is the process of methodically identifying, assessing, and applying existing discoveries as the basis for promoting interventions and making decisions. A strong scientific base for decision making is crucial to reducing the toll of cancer upon our nation. Building an increasing evidence base of proven theories, knowledge, tools, and prevention and intervention techniques can lead to significant progress in reducing the national burden of cancer.

Evidence-based cancer control uses knowledge gained from a variety of disciplines. The dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of cancer control research is illustrated in the DCCPS cancer control framework. This framework shows how the critical components of cancer control research are linked together by the common goal of reducing the cancer burden. By building on knowledge gained from a variety of disciplines, we can systematically set priorities, allocate finite resources, review progress and improve practice. This model is based on the National Cancer Institute of Canada's (NCIC) framework and decisionmaking process for cancer control.3
