General Health Care, Health Benefits and Health Insurance Information:

The United States Department of Labor, through the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration, is responsible for the administration and enforcement of Title I of the Employee Retriement Income Security Aact (ERISA). ERISA governs approximately 2.5 million private-sector employer and union sponsored group health plans which cover approximately 125 million American workers, retirees and dependents.

Georgetown University HIPAA Resource Guides. This site provides Consumer guides describing rights to buy and keep health insurance in each state under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), also known as Kassebaum-Kennedy.

Healthfinder, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), allows you to search for a wide variety of consumer health information and health resources produced by the Federal government and its many partners. Healthfinder includes topics such as breast cancer, women's health, mental health, heart disease, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, aging, and AIDS and HIV infection.

Breast Cancer Information:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures that medicines and medical devices are sage and effective. The FDA website has information about breast implants and breast prostheses. The mission of the Office of Women's Health (OWH) of the FDA is to serve as a champion for women's health.

The Department of Defense Breast Cancer Decision Guide is a website developed by the U.S. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Prevention, Education and Diagnosis Program Initiative for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and their family members. Its purpose is to provide reliable information, clarify issues and encourage communication among patients, doctors, other healthcare providers and family members.

National Cancer Institute, Getting the facts about breast cancer and mammograms is an important step in taking care of your health. This pamphlet will help you to get the information that you need. It provides information on a woman's risk for breast cancer, the National Cancer Institute's recommendations about mammograms, and the benefits and limitations of the procedure.

Women's Health Issues:

The Office On Women's Health within the Department of Health and Human Services is the government's champion and focal point for women's health issues. This site includes a calendar of national women's health events. This site provides information in Spanish and English.

The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) serves as a focal point for women's health research at the National Institutes of Health. The ORWH promotes, stimulates, and supports efforts to improve the health of women through biomedical and behavioral research.

The National Women's Health Information Center is a gateway for women seeking health information. NWHIC is a free information and resource service on women's health issues, including breast cancer and maternal and child health. This site provides information in Spanish and English.

Maternal and Child Health:

Insure Kids Now. Information on each state's child health insurance program. Includes links to program and implementation resources on children's health insurance and information about other insurance programs. Spanish language resources are provided.

The National Child Care Information Center (NCCIC) had been established to complement, enhance and promote child care linkages and to serve as a mechanism for supporting quality, comprehensive services for children and families. NCCIC was established in the Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services to administer federal child care programs to states, territories and tribes for low-income children and families. The Bureau has initiated a variety of activities to improve the quality, availibility and affordability of child care across the country.

The National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health provides national leadership to the maternal and child health community in three key areas of program development, policy analysis and education, and state-of-the-art knowledge to improve the health and well-being of the nation's children and families. NCEMCH is a research institute of Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute.

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau has responsibility for promoting and improving the health of our Nation's mothers and children. The Bureau provides leadership, partnership, and resources to advance the health of mothers, infants, children and adolescents.

Mental Health Issues:

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's mission is to improve the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services in order to reduce illness, disability, and cost to society resulting from substance abuse and mental illnesses SAMHSA's mission is accomplished in partnership with all concerned with substance abuse and mental illnesses.

The National Institute of Mental Health strives to diminish the burden of mental illness through research. Their website provides information about mental health to foster better understanding of mental health issues, treatment, and the latest scientific research developments.

The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) leads Federal efforts to treat mental illnesses by promoting mental health and by preventing the development or worsening of mental illness when possible. CMHS is a component of the Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
