Photograph of James Barnett   Mr. Barnett is currently engaged in the development of prototype XML specifications of a typical industry equipment data sheet. These specifications will be used to develop prototype implementations and industry demonstrations.

Previously, Mr. Barnett worked on the development of a test suite of STEP application protocols to be used by NIST and its academic and industrial partners for testing technologies and standards used by the Construction Industry in information exchange. Before that, he assisted in the installation of a computer and communications laboratory to be used for the development of software for the representation and analysis of construction standards and specifications. He was also involved in the development of software to test the services available in BACnet, which is a protocol that is being developed for the exchange of information (relating to building systems and controls) over a network. Prior to that, he was involved in the development of Standards Analysis, Synthesis and Expression (SASE) software. He has been involved in the design, development and use of computer simulations of the thermal performance of buildings. He has made numerous computer analyses relating building heating, cooling, ventilating, internal heat generation and climatic conditions to building energy requirements. He has also studied the "thermal mass effect" of heavy masonry walls on building energy consumption. He has designed and developed programs for the conversion and reduction of measured data. In collaboration with building economists, he has generated energy consumption data for use in life cycle cost estimates for various energy conserving options.

Mr. Barnett is also the Systems Administrator for the Building Environment Division Novell Local Area Network, the CICE Win NT Server, and the CICE Workstation Cluster.

Prior to coming to BFRL, Mr. Barnett worked in the Heat Division of the National Bureau of Standards for two years participating in the theoretical and computational work on the equation-of-state of gases.
