The Collaborative Staging Manual and Coding Instructions is published jointly by the SEER Program, the
National Program of Cancer Registries of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Collaborative Staging System is a carefully
selected set of data items that describe how far a cancer has spread at the time of diagnosis. It provides
the codes and coding instructions for the Collaborative Staging System fields for cases diagnosed January 1,
2004 and forward. These fields are now required by all central registries in the US and Canada and all hospitals
that report to them.
