Welcome to the Federal Highway Administration

Welcome to the Web site for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). We in the FHWA are committed to working with you, our customers and partners, to keep America moving safely, comfortably, economically, and without harm to our environment. Our mission is to create the best transportation system in the world for the American people through proactive leadership, innovation, and excellence in service. The FHWA is a part of the Department of Transportation and is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with field offices located across the United States.

Our Web site is designed to make it easy for you to find the information you seek about the FHWA. You can scan through pages organized by the Agency's different program areas or check out the What's New section for the latest postings. Take a moment, too, to look at FHWA By Day, a day-by-day history of the Agency and its predecessor organizations going back to 1893.

All motor carrier operations and functions previously performed within the FHWA are now the responsibility of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration which was established on January 1, 2000, as a separate modal administration within the Department of Transportation.

Thank you for visiting the FHWA Web site. And please remember to drive safely.
