Education

NOS provides educational resources for teachers and students interested in oceans, coasts, and charting and navigation.

The education section of NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) Web site is organized into a collection of Discovery Kits describing the scientific principles underlying NOS’s major programs. Discovery Kits have been developed for teachers and students at the high school level, but can easily be adapted to the undergraduate or middle school level. The Tutorials, Roadmaps, and Lesson Plans in each Discovery Kit are designed to work together, but are comprehensive enough to be used on their own.

Coral lesson plan

Corals
NOS is involved in coral reef conservation and research. View a tutorial on the biology of and threats to corals, a roadmap to resources and lesson plans.

tides and water levels lesson plan

Tides and Water Levels
NOS devotes enormous resources, time and expertise to collecting, studying, predicting and disseminating information about our nation's tides and water levels. View a tutorial about the complex system of tides and currents, a roadmap to resources and lesson plans.

geodesy lesson plan

Geodesy
For almost 200 years, the National Geodetic Survey and its predecessors have been using geodesy to map the U.S. Shoreline, determine land boundaries, and improve transportation and navigation safety. View a tutorial on the history, essential elements, and modern methods of geodesy, a roadmap to resources and lesson plans.

Each of the kits above include three components:

  1. An On-line Tutorial, which introduces a scientific subject important to NOS’s mission in an easy-to-follow format and in plain, reader-friendly language. The Tutorials incorporate photographs, videos, illustrations, and animations.

  2. A “Roadmap to Resources” complements the subject introduced in the tutorial. Each Roadmap guides educators and students to specific data offerings within the NOS and NOAA family of Web products.

  3. A set of lesson plans, targeted to educators at the high school level. Each lesson plan combines information from the tutorials with data offerings from the roadmaps. All of the lessons are correlated to National Science Education Standards.

As NOS builds its education program, more tutorials, roadmaps and lesson plans will be offered. Other NOS education materials also will become available on this page.
