My LINCS Help

What is My LINCS?

My LINCS is a useful tool for you to customize the entire LINCS network (national, regional and all state partners) based on your needs. It is a great way to save yourself time and be alerted to new additions to the universe of literacy resources. You can even choose to be alerted by email ( bi-weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly) about new additions that meet your profile.

How do I register for My LINCS?

To register with My LINCS, follow these instructions:

  • Click on the My LINCS Button on any of the LINCS Network sites (National LINCS, Regionals or state partner sites)
  • Enter your first name, last name, and email address in the appropriate boxes

How do I fill out the "Personalize Your Pages" form?

By filling out the "Personalize Your Pages" form, you create a My LINCS profile. This profile is used by LINCS to identify materials that meet your interests. The left side of the screen asks for information about you. The right side asks you to indicate your interests. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*) and in red text. You must fill in the required fields as a minimum to complete registration and create a profile.

    About You

    Please enter your:
          first name
          last name
          email address
    as prompted.
The fields for Title, Organization, State, and Country are not required. There is a pull down menu available for selecting your state.

The "I am a" and the "I am interested in" fields are pull down menus. You can select more than one list entry by holding down the Control key (Ctrl) while clicking on entries of interest.

The "I am a" field tells LINCS what audience you fit into, such as whether you are a tutor or a teacher, a manager of a literacy program, or an industry/business person. This helps focus the resources displayed for you to those in your area(s) of interest. To see all of the materials regardless of intended audience, select All.

The "I am interested in" field lets LINCS know what type of materials you are interested in. Some users may only want web pages, or books, or videos. You can also change your profile for a short time when you are doing research and want to see new articles or bibliographies, but not the videos you are normally interested in as a classroom teacher. It is also possible to register multiple times using variations on your name or a different email address if you have multiple areas of interest you'd like to see different listings for, rather than having them all presented together.

Finally, indicate whether you want to receive My LINCS email alerts and how often. (For more information about My LINCS email alerts, see "What is an "Email Alert"" below

    What does a profile do?

By creating a profile in My LINCS, you can be sure to see all new data on LINCS for your areas of interest. Each of the areas of interest are broad and include 10-25 related terms (To view the topics covered under each area of interest, please click on the area in the box above).

For example, someone interested in dyslexia should choose Learning disabilities as their interest area. The resulting My LINCS page would include new items from all related subject terms..

How do I use My LINCS?

Every time you log on to My LINCS, you will see a list of subject areas. Each subject area listed on the My LINCS results page is an area of interest that has been selected on your user profile. The numbers on the right side of the page are the total number of documents in LINCS on the subject (shown in black) and the number of materials on the subject new since the last time you logged in or received an email alert (shown in red).

When you follow the link on one of the areas of interest, you will be taken to a listing of items (links) listed in alphabetical order, that fall under the selected area of interest. These links lead to the catalog records of each document in LINCS on that subject. From the catalog records, you can learn more about the data in LINCS (such as author, an abstract, publisher, etc.); you can link from the catalog records to the materials if they are available online; and you can also find out ordering information or borrowing information for materials not online.

What are My LINCS Email Alerts?

An email alert is a message that is automatically generated that lets you know that there are new items on LINCS that fit your profile. You will then be pointed to the My LINCS URL so you can log in and view the new data.

When you fill out your profile information, you can select whether or not you want to receive email alerts and, if you do, how often you want to receive the alerts (bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly).

Email alerts are sent at the period specified if the following criteria is met:

    • there is new data available on LINCS that meets the your profile.
    • you have not logged into My LINCS or received an email alert in the past period (period being how often you selected to receive email alerts)
