Other Benefits

Women Veterans Benefits and Issues

Question: When VA grants a claim for VA disability compensation, are there any other benefits that may be available to a veteran because she or he is a service-connected disabled veteran?

Answer: As a service-connected disabled veteran, she or he MAY be entitled to additional benefits from not only the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also from other Federal, State and local community programs. Information about some of these other benefits is provided below.

Remember, most VA facilities have a Women Veterans Coordinator to assist you in applying for VA benefit programs and health care services.  Contact your local Coordinator today. 

 

If VA has determined that a disability is service-connected and has evaluated it as non-compensable or 0%, a veteran MAY be entitled some of these additional benefits: 

  • Service Disabled-RH Life Insurance                             
  • Clothing Allowance                             
  • Prosthetics & Sensory, Rehabilitative Aids                             
  • Federal Employment Preference Visit Office of Personnel Management                             
  • Service-connected burial allowance                             
  • Dependence & Indemnity Compensation 

If VA awarded compensation for disability rated 10% service-connected disabled, or higher, a veteran MAY be entitled to one or more of these other benefits, in addition to those indicated above: 

If VA has awarded compensation for disability rated 30% service-connected disabled, or higher, a veteran MAY be entitled these other benefits, in addition to those indicated above: 

  • Additional allowance for dependents 

If VA has awarded compensation for disability rated 50% service-connected disabled, or higher, a veteran MAY be entitled to some of these other benefits, in addition to those indicated above: 

  • Special Monthly Compensation for certain conditions                               
  • Automobile grant &/or adaptive equipment 

If VA has awarded compensation for disability rated at 100% service-connected disabled a veteran MAY be entitled to some of these other benefits, in addition to those indicated above:

State Benefits

Many of the states provide benefits for veterans and their dependents. Some of these include: State Veterans Homes, assistance in purchasing a home, educational benefits for veterans, their spouses and children of POWs and servicepersons missing in action. Some states provide special benefits for certain disabled veterans that include free car licenses, tax exemptions, free fishing and hunting licenses, etc. Contact your local State Veterans Program or State Director for Veterans Affairs.

Federal Benefits

Veterans Preference for Federal Jobs: 

Veterans who are disabled or who served on active duty in the armed forces during certain designated time periods are entitled to a hiring preference over non-veterans both in Federal hiring practices and in retention. For more information visit the Office or Personnel Management

Veterans' Reemployment Rights:

 The Uniformed Service Employment & Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 provides that veterans of active military service who leave employment with private industry, state or local government or the Federal government for the purpose of entering military service have specific reemployment rights upon their return to pre-service employment.
