Farming- Provided by the Animal Welfare Institute. This
searchable database contains published and online information for those
concerned about factory farming and seeking humane alternatives. Updated
regularly.
Alternatives to Skin Irritation Testing in Animals- Jane Huggins, Ph.D. maintains this site for educational use. Contains 210 abstracts from peer-reviewed journals.
Altweb- Collection of
alternatives articles, conference proceedings, and other
resources.
Alternatives in Education Database -
Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR)- Online
searchable database of alternatives to harming or killing nonhuman animals
used in education.
Center for Research Libraries (CRL) Foreign Doctoral Dissertations Database-
A database (under construction with 10,000 records currently searchable) of
CRL's more than 750,000 uncataloged scholarly research dissertations on all
topics. CRL is an international not-for-profit consortium of colleges,
universities and libraries that makes available scholarly research resources
to users everywhere.
Combined Livestock Issues Database-
Searchable database of references from the Livestock Issues Database (LIBD)
and the Animal Behavior & Welfare Research Centre Database. Updated quarterly.
Compilation of
Literature on the Assessment of Animal Welfare and Animal Distress-
Over 600 journal citations including some with links to the full text documents. Also includes links to
regulatory websites.
Computer Retrieval of Information on
Scientific Projects (CRISP)- Searchable database of federally
funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals,
and other research institutions. Maintained by the Office of Extramural
Research, National Institutes of Health.
Current Contents Connect- Produced by Thomson ISI, includes recent listings of scientific literature in Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sciences, Social & Behavioral Sciences, Clinical
Medicine,
Life Sciences, Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences, and Engineering, Computing & Technology. Requires password.
Current Research Information System (CRIS)- Lists USDA-sponsored projects.
Current Status and Future Developments of Databases on Alternative Methods:
The report and recommendations of ECVAM Workshop 25 (1998)-
International report that lists factual databases related to alternatives, what they offer, lack, and
recommendations for improvements.
DIALOG - Multidatabase system vendor. Requires password.
DoD Biomedical Research Database-
Department of Defense database developed from biomedical research, testing or
training programs federally funded on an annual basis. Coverage includes:
infectious diseases, biological hazards, toxicology, medical chemical defense,
medical biological defense, clinical medicine, clinical surgery, physical
protection, training, graduate medical education and instruction.
DoE Information Bridge-
Department of Energy database of 60,000 scientific and technical reports. Free acceess to
full-text and bibliographic records of research and development reports in physics, chemistry, materials, biology,
environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy,
and other topics.
DTIC- Defense Technical Information
Center contains unclassified U.S. Department of Defense technical reports and
research and development summaries. An extension of DTIC,
Scientific and Technical Information Network (STINET) Service,
provides access to all unclassified, unlimited citations to documents added
into DTIC from late December 1974 to the present.
Ensembl Human Genome Central-
Ensembl is a searchable database resulting from a joint project between
EMBL-EBI and the Sanger Centre to provide access to sequences in human
chromosomes.
European Veterinary Dissertations
(EVD) Database- Compiled by Euroscience, in co-operation with the
Library of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, The
Netherlands and under the auspices of the European
Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (E.A.E.V.E.). Updated
monthly.
Federal Research and Development Project Summaries-
Descriptions, awards and summaries of federally funded research.
Search across databases from the Department of Energy, National Institutes
of Health and the National Science Foundation with a single query.
German Primate Center
Tumor Register- A database of comprehensive records of tumor
incidences in different primate species.
HealthGate- Contains access to medical and biomedical databases such as
MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, CancerLit, BIOETHICSLINE.
Information on Alternatives Databases- Produced by The Norwegian Reference Centre for Laboratory Animal Science and Alternatives. Describes databases addressing all aspects of Replacement,
Reduction, and Refinement of animal experiments.
International Directory of Primatology- Wisconsin Regional Primate Center listing of primatology organizations, population management groups, and other information resources.
Laboratory Animal
Science Acronyms- ILAR listing of acronyms.
LEXIS-NEXIS Statistical Universe for Health Statistics- Search
over 30,000 statistical tables from over fifty U.S. Department of Health
and Services publications. Publications include vital statistics reports,
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advance Data statistics, and
the National Center for Health Statistics documents. Password
required.
MEDLINE

MEDLINE®(Medical Literature, Analysis, and Retrieval System Online) is the
U.S. National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic database
that contains over 12 million references to journal articles in life
sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. It can be searched via
PubMed®
or the NLM Gateway.
National Toxicology Program
Studies Database (NTP)- The NTP is an interagency program
consisting of relevant toxicology activities of the National Institutes of
Health's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH/NIEHS),
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/ NIOSH), and the Food and Drug
Administration's National Center for Toxicological Research (FDA/NCTR).
Currently three databases are available for searching:
The
Individual Studies Database--search studies by chemical name;
The Pathology Incidence Rates Database--search chronic and
prechronic studies
collected in the Toxicology Database Management System; and
The Individual Animal Pathology Database--search
for chronic studies collected in the NTP's Toxicology
Database Management System and Carcinogenesis Bioassay Data System.
NLM Gateway-
The NLM Gateway is a Web-based system that lets users search simultaneously
in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).
It allows users of NLM services to initiate searches
from one Web interface, providing "one-stop searching" for many of
NLM's information resources or databases.
NORINA- Produced by The
Norwegian Reference Centre for Laboratory Animal Science and Alternatives.
Lists over 3600 audiovisual resources with contact information for use as
adjuncts and alternatives to
using animals in education. Includes 3-D models, computer simulations,
videos, films, slides, and other media.
OLDMEDLINE- Accessed via the
NLM Gateway. Contains citations
published in the 1958 through 1965, Cumulated Index Medicus and covers the
fields of medicine, preclinical sciences, and allied health sciences.
Subject searching of this file is available through key words (the
original Medical Subject Headings, MeSH, assigned back in 1960-65) and
text phrases. Unlike MEDLINE, this file contains no abstracts nor MeSH
heading (MH) field data from NLM's current controlled vocabulary.
OVID- Multidatabase vendor.

PrimateLit-
PrimateLit is a bibliographical database for primatology and exists
through a cooperative agreement between the Washington (WaNRPC) and
Wisconsin (WRPC) National Primate Research Centers. The database,
comprising over 165,000 records dating from 1940, allows primate
researchers to do their bibliographic research on their home or office
computers.
PubMed- PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine,
provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's
and additional life science journals.
The PubMed database is made available
via the NCBI Entrez retrieval
system. Entrez is the text-based search and retrieval system used
at NCBI for all major databases including MEDLINE, Nucleotide, and
Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes,
Taxonomy, OMIM, and many others.
Refinement and Environmental Enrichment for All Laboratory Animals-
This information resource is a merger of the two databases on refinement &
enrichment for
non-primate and primate
laboratory animals. It disseminates reference material on all aspects of
refinement of housing and handling conditions and environmental enrichment
for ALL animals kept in research, testing and teaching institutions. This
database comprises published articles, abstracts, book chapters, books,
photos, and videotapes. Entries have been read/screened and annotated by
the authors to guarantee their relevance to the topic.
Scirus-
An internet search tool developed by Elsevier Science concentrating on
sites that contain
scientific content only and searches both Web and membership sources.
TEXTBASE - Produced by The
Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, Laboratory Animal Unit.
Searchable database of approximately 740 current text books within
the field of laboratory animal science.
TOXNET- Access to toxicology databases including RTECS, Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances, and CCRIS, Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System.
VETBASE- 13,000 dosages of veterinary drugs. Requires password.
VetGate -
Free access to a searchable catalogue of Internet sites covering animal health.
