STATEMENT BY DIRECTOR OF CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE
GEORGE J. TENET
ON
ANNOUNCEMENT OF KEY PERSONNEL APPOINTMENTS

Director of Central Intelligence George J. Tenet today announced the selection of two CIA veteran officers to senior positions.

Winston P. Wiley, who has served as the Deputy Director for Intelligence (DDI) since August 2000, was appointed to the newly created position of Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Homeland Security, effective May 28.

In making the appointment, Tenet stressed the importance of ensuring the efficient, secure, and timely flow of intelligence to help protect lives and property in the United States. “The Intelligence Community needs to do all it can to support the Administration’s efforts to organize and coordinate the many component parts of homeland security,” he said.

Pointing out that Wiley will oversee, orchestrate, and enhance the Intelligence Community’s contribution to homeland defense, Tenet said, “As a 35-year veteran of the CIA, former Chief of the Counterterrorist Center, and Deputy Director for Intelligence, Winston brings an enormous amount of analytic expertise, substantive breadth, and interagency experience to the position.”

Wiley, who was born in Frankfurt, Germany, received a B.A. in economics from the American University in 1969 and a Masters in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in 1980.

Tenet also named Jami Miscik, the Associate Deputy Director of Intelligence (ADDI), to replace Wiley as DDI. Miscik, who joined the CIA in 1983, has served in senior positions at the NSC and in the Directorate of Intelligence (DI). Prior to being named the ADDI in August 2000, she was Director of the DI’s Office of Transnational Issues.

“Jami Miscik brings a wealth of experience to her new job,” Tenet said. “She is a first-rate analyst and manager, and she has the leadership skills to guide the Directorate of Intelligence as it tackles the many intelligence challenges of the future. I know that Jami and Winston will work exceptionally well together on Homeland Security issues.”

Miscik, who received a B.A. in economics and political science from Pepperdine University in 1980 and an M.A. in International Studies from the University of Denver in 1982, was born in Chicago and grew up in Redondo Beach, California.
