QUANAH
CROSSLAND STAMPS NAMED COMMISSIONER FOR THE
ADMINISTRATION ON NATIVE AMERICANS
Quanah Crossland
Stamps has been sworn in as commissioner of the Administration for Native
Americans, a federal agency that promotes the goal of social and economic
self-sufficiency of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians,
Native Samoans and other Native American Pacific Islanders. The Administration
for Native Americans is part of HHS' Administration for Children and
Families.
"Quanah Stamps has
been a dedicated advocate of the numerous tribes and native Americans
throughout her career," Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said. "Her experience
will allow us to build strong social and economic development programs
for the betterment of all indigenous peoples."
Stamps has held
a number of government positions that dealt directly with improving
the administrative, business, economic development and educational activities
of American Indians, Alaskan Natives and Native Hawaiians. In 1998,
Stamps established her own consulting practice dealing with foreign
companies in the Russian Far East and the Republic of Macedonia who
were interested in accessing the U.S. marketplace as well as provide
business technical assistance to Tribally owned firms.
"Quanah Stamps
understands that strong economic opportunities and jobs help sustain
healthy families and healthy communities," said Wade F. Horn, assistant
secretary for children and families. "Her enthusiasm and experience
in creating these opportunities will be a tremendous asset to the Native
American community."
ANA is the only
federal agency serving all Native Americans, including over 500 federally
recognized tribes, 60 tribes that are state recognized or seeking federal
recognition, Indian organizations, over 200 Alaska villages, Native
Hawaiian communities, and populations throughout the Pacific basin.
