Campfire permits are required outside of developed campgrounds on all California National Forest System Lands. Permits are free, and can be obtained at any Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, or California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection Office. Please See Contact Us for locations of Modoc National Forest Offices.

Dry California summers sometimes bring high fire danger and special fire restrictions. Regulations governing fire restrictions are specific to each National Forest and change with weather conditions and the seasons. Before each visit please check with the Forest you plan to visit for current fire restrictions. more button click for more information

Beginning April 18, 2003, Golden Passports Will Be Honored at More National Forest Fee Sites! Before purchasing a local or regional pass, consider the choices.

If you recreate frequently on federal lands such as National Forests, National Parks, Bureau of Land Management, or US Fish and Wildlife Service, the better value may be the Golden Eagle Passport. Golden Age and Golden Access Passports are also honored at these same locations.

The Golden Passport Program is a federal interagency recreation pass program, comprised of three distinct Passports:more button click for more information

You can obtain Golden Age, Golden Eagle and Golden Access passes at any of our Offices,. only Golden Eagle passports are available online at: https://www.orders.com/nfs/requestinfo.cfm

Wilderness Permit - Permits are not required for the Modoc National Forest - South Warner Wilderness. Campfire permits are required - see above.

Christmas Tree Cutting Permit
Christmas Tree Permits go on sale usually in November and are good through December 24. Permits are for personal use only and can be obtained more button click for more information

Special Use Permit
Collecting lava rock even for personal use requires a Special Use Permit. Permits are also required when:

  • If you will need to occupy, use , or build on National Forest System Lands;
  • If there is a fee being charged or if income is derived from the use;
  • If an activity on National Forest System Land involves individuals or organization with 75 or more participants or spectators.

Special Forest Product Permits
Collecting any thing on National Forest Lands for commercial use requires a Special Forest Product Permit. Commonly requested permits are for mushrooms, manzanita burros, post, poles and rails. For more information please contact the office nearest you. more button click for more information
