October 22, 2004: Oregon Dunes Sand Camping Preliminary Analysis Ready For Review
The South Zone of the Siuslaw National Forest would like to remind everyone that the public comment period for the preliminary analysis for the proposed OHV Sand Camping Project is now open.

October 20, 2004: Oregon Dunes and Cape Perpetua Visitor Centers End Summer Hours
With the coming of the winter weather and the close of the primary tourist season, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Cape Perpetua Visitor Centers will end regularly scheduled public hours.

October 20, 2004: Tsalila Festival Receives Education Award
The Tsalila Umpqua River Festival has received an award from the Environmental Education Association of Oregon as the environmental organization of the year.

September 22, 2004: Preliminary Analysis Completed For Yachats Terrestrial Restoration Project
The South Zone of the Siuslaw National Forest is seeking public comment on the preliminary analysis for the proposed Yachats Terrestrial Restoration Project. The Project proposes implementing actions such as thinning (commercial and non-commercial) plantations to speed the development of late-successional habitat in late-successional and riparian reserves. It also proposes to stabilize and/or decommission some roads in the Yachats watershed to enhance watershed function. One alternative also proposes maintenance and repair of 6 key forest roads. The preliminary analysis is available at the District Offices in Florence and Waldport, and the Supervisor’s Office in Corvallis.

September 21, 2004: Siuslaw National Forest To Construct Fuel Break
Residents in the area of Joshua Lane and Kla-Ha-Nee, north of Florence have the opportunity to observe the latest project undertaken by the Siuslaw National Forest to reduce the threat to urban residents by wildfire. Heavy accumulations of forest fuels are being removed to create protective fuel breaks between the forest and private residents. This is the second phase of a project that was initiated earlier this year

September 21, 2004: Hazardous Fuels Burn Planned For Horsfall Beach
Fire Management personnel on the Siuslaw National Forest are planning to conduct a prescribed burning operation at Horsfall Beach as early as Friday, September 24. The purpose of the burn is to reduce hazardous fuel buildup and to eradicate Scot’s broom growing in the area.

September 20, 2004: Rain Delays Work on Marys Peak Road
Scheduled repairs on the Marys Peak road have been delayed due to the recent rainy weather. The paving and associated sealing work is now scheduled for September 28 through the September 30.

September 20, 2004: Work On Umpqua Beach Access May Create Delays
The access road to Umpqua Beach parking lots 1, 2, and 3 will be getting scheduled repairs and maintenance, which could cause temporary delays for visitors to this area. The project is scheduled to begin Wednesday, September 22. Depending on weather conditions, the project is expected to be completed by October 1.

September 20, 2004: Siuslaw National Forest Welcomes New Forest Supervisor
José Linares took the helm as the new supervisor of the Siuslaw National Forest today. Linares formerly was Associate District Manager with Salem Bureau of Land Management.

September 15, 2004: Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Shifts to Fall Hours
Due to fall weather approaching and end of the summer tourism season, Cape Perpetua Visitor Center hours will change.

September 10, 2004: National Public Lands Day: “It’s for your favorite spaces!”
Since 1994, National Public Lands Day has been a day to celebrate and care for our public lands. This year, celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 18, 2004 by volunteering -- or just by taking advantage of the fee-free option at your favorite place.

September 2, 2004: Road Work May Cause Delays on Marys Peak Road
Repairs on the road to the top of Marys Peak may cause slight delays for vehicles traveling to this popular recreation area during the month of September.

September 1, 2004: Siuslaw River Partnership Wins International Riverprize
Members of a partnership that make up Siuslaw River Basin Restoration projects on the Central Oregon Coast are first-time winners for the United States in an international river restoration award.

August 30, 2004: Rain Forces Extension of Slab Creek Road Closure
Slab Creek road, currently closed at MP 2.25 from Highway 18 will remain closed until September 30, allowing the contractor an additional two weeks to complete the project.

August 23, 2004: Public Use Restrictions Lifted
Due to the rain that has fallen over the past several days, and the forecast for more to follow throughout the week, the Siuslaw National Forest has lifted the public use restrictions on the Forest.

August 18, 2004: Siuslaw National Forest Enacts Fire Regulations
Due to increasing temperatures along the Oregon Coast and throughout the West, the Siuslaw National Forest will be implementing special fire regulations beginning Thursday, August 19, 2004.

July 28, 2004: Cape Perpetua to Host Tidepool Discovery Days
Whispering Spruce Trail Opens

The staff and volunteers at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will once again be hosting Tidepool Discovery Days on Wednesday, August 4 and Thursday, August 5, 2004.

Also at Cape Perpetua, the reconstruction of the Whispering Spruce Trail has been completed and is now open to the public. With the completion of the trail work, the road to the top of Cape Perpetua and the overlook are also open.

July 27, 2004: Recent Accidents Prompt Safety Reminder
Officials from the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area wish to remind Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts to ride with safety as the number one objective during their visit to this popular riding destination. The Dunes has experienced several ATV accidents and two fatalities this summer, prompting this mid-summer reminder.

July 21, 2004: Culvert Replacement Will Temporarily Close North Beaver Creek Road
The North Beaver Creek Road, Forest Service Road 5031, will be closed near milepost 10 for the replacement of a culvert beginning August 16. The closure is expected to last 30 days.

July 21, 2004: Bridge Construction To Temporarily Close Forest Service Road 2400
A bridge construction project at Carter Creek will result in the temporary closure of Forest Service Road 2400 beginning Monday, July 26. The closure is expected to last approximately 30 days.

July 19, 2004: Temporary Closure of Old Scenic Highway 101 (Slab Creek) at Toketa Creek Crossing
Old Scenic Highway 101, commonly known as Slab Creek Road, will be closed at MP 2.25 from the Highway 18 access beginning August 16th to replace an undersized culvert to allow for fish passage and re-establish a stable road bed. Work is scheduled to begin August 16th. The contract allows for road closure up to 30 consecutive days.

July 8, 2004: Portion of Forest Service Road 2234 Closed August 6 - October 31
Forest Service road 2234 beginning at it’s intersection with OR Highway 22 and up to the intersection of FS 2282 will be closed for logging operations associated with the Little Hebo Thin Contract.

July 7, 2004: 2004 Matsutake Mushroom Auction
The Mapleton Ranger District, the Waldport Ranger District and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area of the Siuslaw National Forest will jointly offer one hundred (100) six-month Commercial Matsutake Mushroom permits in a sealed bid auction to be held on August 10, 2004 at 1:30 pm.

July 1, 2004: Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee Recommends 2005 Projects
By recommending twenty-four projects on June 14, members of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) put $1.4 million towards national forest management for 2005, according to forest officials.

July 1, 2004: Siuslaw National Forest Welcomes Interim Forest Supervisor
Kevin Martin, deputy forest supervisor for the Deschutes National Forest, has accepted a temporary appointment to serve as the acting forest supervisor for the Siuslaw National Forest. Martin will serve as the acting forest supervisor until a permanent forest supervisor is hired.

July 1, 2004: Canal Creek Road Closed For Culvert Replacement
The Canal Creek Road, Forest Service Road 3462, which accesses the Canal Creek Campground will be closed at milepost 3 from July 12, 2004 through August 12, 2004 due to the replacement of a culvert at that site. This closure will affect access to areas above Bear Creek, including the Canal Creek Campground.

June 24, 2004: Former Alsea Ranger District Sells
Two Blodgett residents purchased the former Alsea Ranger District yesterday for $450,000. Plans for the property, located approximately 20 miles west of Corvallis, are unknown at this time.

June 21, 2004: Cape Perpetua to Host Tidepool Discovery Days
Staff and Volunteers at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be hosting Tidepool Discovery Days on Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4, 2004.

June 15,2004: South District Welcomes Deputy Ranger
The new Deputy Ranger for the South District of the Siuslaw National Forest is Bill Blackwell. Bill comes to the Siuslaw from the Gold Beach Ranger District on the Siskiyou National Forest, where he served as the district recreation staff and resource planner for the past 12 years.

June 9, 2004: Citizens Sought for Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee
Individuals interested in becoming members of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee are encouraged to fill out an application form prior to July 2.

June 4, 2004: Siuslaw Resource Advisory Meets to Recommend 2005 Projects
Members of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will meet June 14 in Florence to recommend spending up to $1.4 million on projects designed to improve natural resources on federal lands in Benton, Coos, Douglas, Lane, Lincoln, Tillamook and Yamhill counties.

May 21, 2004: Alcohol Ban In Off-Highway Vehicle Riding Areas
Siuslaw National Forest officials want to remind people planning to visit either Sand Lake Recreation Area or the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area that possession of alcohol in off-highway vehicle riding areas is banned.

May 17, 2004: Wildflower Show on the Coast
The staff at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area’s Visitor Center is inviting you to join them for "A Day of Wildflower Walks" on Saturday, May 22.

May 6, 2004: Mother’s Day Designated Fee Free
Sunday, May 9 is Mothers Day. It has also been declared a fee-free day on the South Zone of the Siuslaw National Forest.

April 30, 2004: Supervisor Brown Accepts New Leadership Position
Gloria Brown, Forest Supervisor for the Siuslaw National Forest since 1999, will take leadership of the Los Padres National Forest in Southern California as Forest Supervisor effective June 27.

April 28, 2004: Oregon Dunes and Cape Perpetua Looking For Volunteers
If you have at least four hours a week that you would like to spend sharing your knowledge of the Oregon Coast, the Siuslaw National Forest has opportunities for you as a volunteer naturalist.

April 20, 2004: Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Opens May 1
The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area will be open for the summer on Saturday, May 1, 2004. The Visitor Information Center provides educational and hands-on activities for both young and old and provides access and activities for people with disabilities. Guided naturalist programs, walks, and interpretive exhibits are also available at the center.

April 19, 2004: Gorse, An Unwelcome Coastal Visitor
The spread of non-native plants is an increasing problem throughout the country including the central Oregon Coast. Described as one of the four major issues facing the Forest Service by current Chief of the Forest Service Dale Bosworth, invasive plants are threatening to take over areas formerly inhabited by native species. The most common species in our area are gorse, Scot’s Broom, Portuguese Broom, Himalayan Blackberry, and European Beachgrass.

April 1, 2004: 2004 Recreation Pass Program Announced
Beginning May 1, national forests in the Northwest will be making changes to the recreation pass program that affect the number and type of fee sites. These changes are prompted by national policy to create consistency where fees are charged across the Forest Service for recreation sites and for services to enhance the recreation experience for visitors.

March 29, 2004: Marys Peak Road To Open April 1
The road to the top of Marys Peak is clear of snow and will be open to the public on April 1. Road maintenance crews from the Siuslaw National Forest have cleared the road of rocks, limbs and other winter debris this past week, providing safe access to this popular locale.

March 26, 2004: Siuslaw National Forest Studying District Office Location
The Siuslaw National Forest is conducting a facilities analysis that will review and re-evaluate the decision made in 2000 to make the Florence office district headquarters. The Forest wants to ensure they are moving ahead with the most cost-effective, employee productive and community service-oriented decision available.

March 26, 2004: Siuslaw National Forest Announces Changes In Greenery Sales
The Siuslaw National Forest will soon begin implementing changes to how greenery permits are issued for the eastern portion of the Waldport Ranger District.

March 22, 2004: FS Intends To Harvest Trees From Slide Area
On February 4, 2004 a large slide adjacent to Douglas County Road 49 occurred. The slide knocked over a support tower and poles from two separate Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) powerlines. In the process of re-storing power and to protect their lines, BPA felled 40-60 year-old conifers that had grown up under and adjacent to the power lines. It is estimated that about 300 thousand board feet (MBF) of commercial timber spread over 10 acres was felled.

March 11, 2004: Trash Dumps on National Forest a Growing Problem
Illegal dumping of household and commercial refuse on national forest lands is a growing concern to land managers. Trash dumpsites ranging from a small pickup load to large sites consisting of abandoned automobiles, furniture, appliances, and construction materials are spreading along forest roads.

March 9, 2004: No Changes in 2004 To Sand Camping At Oregon Dunes NRA
The sand camping program at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area will remain unchanged for this year. Proposed changes that would designate sand camping sites and require visitors to camp only in designated sites will not take place until next year, according to recreation managers

March 5, 2004: Construction Activities To Impact Recreation Sites
Construction of new facilities, and repairs and upgrades to trails will result in temporary closure of Devils Churn, Restless Waters Trail, Whispering Spruce Trail, and Tillicum Campground.

March 4, 2004: Tsalila Partnership Garners National Award
The national “Rise To The Future” awards were announced recently and the Tsalila Partnership has been honored in the Public Awareness category. The awards are presented each year by the U. S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service to acknowledge top performers nationwide who are making significant contributions to aquatic resource management.

February 13, 2004: Grant Money Available for Siuslaw Stewardship Area
Money to assist projects supporting various aspects of watershed and community health in the Siuslaw River watershed and adjacent coastal lakes is available now through a competitive grant application process.

February 13, 2004: Deadline for Natural Resource Projects
Local citizens now have an opportunity to propose resource management projects under the provisions of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000

January 26, 2004: Devil's Churn To Get Facelift
The popular Devil’s Churn day-use area at Cape Perpetua Scenic Area will be receiving a much-needed renovation. Construction is scheduled to begin in early February, with completion expected to be by the Memorial Day weekend.

January 21, 2004: Fish Returning To Enchanted Valley Encouraging
Resource specialists on the Siuslaw National Forest are encouraged by the good numbers of coho salmon that have returned to Bailey Creek in Enchanted Valley, located north of Florence.

January 14, 2004: Snowmobiles Prohibited At Marys Peak
“We would like to remind winter recreationists that Marys Peak is not managed for snowmobile use, therefore the use of snowmobiles is prohibited,” said Mike Harvey, acting deputy ranger for the South Zone. The prohibited use of snowmobiles includes the entire length of the Marys Peak road from the junction of Highway 34 to the top of the peak.
