Mission

Poultry Microbiological Safety Research Unit (PMSRU)

Mission Statement:

To work together with the U.S. poultry industry, regulatory, and public health agencies to determine the epidemiology of and develop innovative intervention technologies to prevent or diminish Salmonella, Campylobacter and other human enteropathogenic bacteria in and on poultry.

Research Projects:

The Salmonella CRIS will: 1) evaluate and develop molecular methods to epidemiologically track Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens, 2) implement intervention strategies at breeder farms, hatcheries and grow-out farms, 3) conduct follow-up epidemiology studies to monitor and evaluate effectiveness of intervention strategies, 4) recommend Good Production Practice (GPP) guidelines and work with the poultry industry to have these programs voluntarily implemented industry wide.

The Campylobacter CRIS will: 1) develop improved cultural methods for recovery and enumeration of Campylobacter, 2) evaluate and develop molecular methods to epidemiologically track Campylobacter, 3) determine the sources and risk factors for Campylobacter in poultry and impact on human disease in a closed system, 4) develop novel intervention technologies to reduce Campylobacter, minimize the use of antibiotics, control animal disease, and enhance chicken production.

The Poultry Litter CRIS will: 1) Make a pathogen-in-litter database and identify major determinants of pathogen survival in poultry litters, 2) identify, develop and test cost effective and environmentally compatible antimicrobial interventions with which to treat poultry litters to prevent pathogen transmission to the environment or human food supply.
