Ames Laboratory has a variety of programs aimed at forming partnerships with private and public entities. Most important of these is technology transfer which is designed to move the basic science developed here to the private sector where that science can be applied to improve the quality of products and services available to the public.

As a federally-funded, U.S. Department of Energy research facility, the goods and services that the Laboratory purchases in order to operate are handled by the Purchasing Services Offices.

The Environment, Safety, Health & Assurance Office helps ensure a safe working environment for Laboratory employees but also works with university and local agencies so that the Laboratory's operation contributes to the overall safety of the community.

The Materials Preparation Center is a DOE national user facility that specializes in the preparation, purification, and characterization of rare earth, alkaline-earth, and refractory metal materials. MPC provides research and developmental quantities of high-purity materials and unique characterization services to scientists at university, industry and government facilities on a cost-recovery basis, allowing access to novel materials and new technologies as they are developed.

The Laboratory also provides engineering and graphic services primarily to clients on campus who have need for services that are not commercially available.

Media interested in covering research activities or events at Ames Laboratory will find assistance with arranging interviews, photos, and essential background information in the Public Affairs Office.
