For more than 20 years, researchers have tested, developed, and evaluated new heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning, and combined heat and power concepts, full-scale systems, and components at the world class Advanced Thermal Conversion Laboratory, located in NREL's Thermal Test Facility.

NREL researchers have achieved a world record concentration of 50,000 suns at the High-Flux Solar Furnace. The heat generated at this facility can be used for materials processing and advanced materials manufacturing, ultra-accelerated weathering, and detoxifying hazardous wastes.

Completed in 1993, the Solar Energy Research Facility (SERF) houses 42 laboratories for research in photovoltaics, superconductivity, and related materials science. SERF is one of the federal government's most energy efficient buildings, using approximately 50% less energy than typical research facilities

The Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) provides a local solar resource database, provides outdoor radiometer calibrations, and supports the radiation measurement and instrumentation needs of renewable energy R&D. The SRRL is one of the four longest-running radiation monitoring stations in the U.S.—there is no other available facility with 14 years of continuous solar radiation measurement.

The Thermal Test Facility, completed in 1996, provides state-of-the-art laboratories for testing energy saving technologies using 60% less energy than a building constructed according to Federal Energy Code.
