Ground Water in the Great Lakes Basin: the Case of Southeastern Wisconsin

Map of Great Lakes

Important efforts are now underway to protect all the water resources of the Great Lakes basin. This new Web site was created to support those efforts and to improve our understanding of ground-water flow in relation to the Great Lakes. More.....

U.S. Streamflow Measurement and Data Dissemination Improve  (103KB PDF file)

Streamflow information is essential for many important uses across a broad range of scales, including global water balances, engineering design, flood forecasting, reservoir operations, navigation, water supply, recreation, and environmental management. The USGS operates over 7,000 stream gages nationwide, which constitute over 90% of the Nation's stream gages that provide daily streamflow records, and that are accessible to the public. More...

The USGS is monitoring for changes in channel geomorphology of North Fish Creek near Ashland resulting from bank stabilization and channel relocation work being done by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Engineering Dept.

Recent work focused on a site located in a remote deep valley, with 200-ft bluffs and inaccessible to motorized equipment. A team of Belgian horses, Dolly and Cher, owned by Jacob Obletz of Rocking O Ranch Logging in Mason, Wisconsin and used locally to haul logs from small tracts of selectively-cut forests, provided the solution to relocating the large boulders. The horses worked well despite hot weather and poor footing both in the water and on the steep access trail. More....

What is the USGS?

The USGS is the Nation's largest water, earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency and has the principal responsibility within the Federal government for providing hydrologic information and for appraising the Nation's water resources. Water-resource activities in Wisconsin are done by hydrologists, hydrologic technicians, and others in the District office in Middleton and in field offices in Middleton, Merrill, and Rice Lake.
