NAEP Activities

NAEP 2005

National and state reading, mathematics, and science assessments will be conducted from January 24 - March 4, 2005. National assessments will be conducted at all grade levels (4, 8, and 12), while state assessments will be conducted only at grades 4 and 8.

In a small number of schools there will be several pilot tests (civics, economics, reading, math, U.S. history) for which no scores will be reported. There is also a small study in science to evaluate any change resulting from the rearrangement of the order of the sections or timing of the student booklets.

There will be two special studies in 2005. The National Indian Education Study (NIES), will be carried out during the NAEP 2005 assessments in mathematics and reading at grades 4 and 8. The goal of the study is to provide reliable estimates of American Indian and Alaska Native student performance on NAEP. A High School Transcript Study will be conducted by collecting transcripts of graduating twelfth-grade students. The NAEP High School Transcript Study periodically surveys the curricula being offered in our nation's high schools and the course-taking patterns of high school students through a collection of transcripts.

NAEP 2004

The 2003-2004 assessments included long-term trend assessments, a foreign language pilot test, and a field test for the 2005 reading and mathematics assessment. Approximately 1,500 schools across the nation participated.

From October 2003 through May 2004, NAEP conducted the long-term trend assessments in reading and mathematics. For the long-term trend assessments, students are selected by their ages rather than grade levels. Assessments for 13-year-olds were conducted from October through December 2003. Assessments for nine-year-old students were conducted from January through March 2004, and 17-year-olds were assessed from March through May 2004.

During October and November, a pilot test of the NAEP foreign language assessment was conducted in approximately 200 high schools throughout the country. NAEP conducted field tests from January 26 to March 5, 2004, in reading and mathematics, as well as a pilot test in science, at grades 4, 8, and 12 in approximately 800 schools.

NAEP 2003

Results of the 2003 reading and mathematics assessments are now available. In addition to states, 10 large urban districts and 5 other jurisdictions participated.

Results of the 2003 Trial Urban District Assessments in reading and mathematics are now available. The assessments were conducted in nine urban districts throughout the country: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Diego, as well as the District of Columbia.

In a small number of schools, NAEP conducted a pilot test assessment in reading and mathematics in grade 12 for which no scores will be reported. There are also two small studies in reading and mathematics to evaluate any change resulting from the rearrangement of the order of the sections or timing of the student booklets. Over 727,800 students participated in the 2003 NAEP assessments.

In 2003, NAEP also did a small study using an augmented sample of charter schools. These data may be investigated in the Data Tool by typing "charter" into the Keyword Search box.

The Technology Rich Environments (TRE) assessment examined eighth-grade students' abilities to explore and synthesize scientific information online. It is one of a series of three technology-based research studies funded by NCES. The other two components were the 2002 Writing Online (WOL) study and the Math Online (MOL) study administered in 2001.
