Looking for Health Information?

Try the National Library of Medicine's MedlinePlus for consumer health materials and links, chosen and reviewed for quality by the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

Multilingual Health Information provides links to useful multilingual online health resources and is organized by specific languages. Easy-to-Read Health Information provides links from MedlinePlus to resources written in plain language.

PubMed provides access to MEDLINE, the world's most extensive listing of medical journal articles and includes seventeen consumer-level journals. Discover how to limit your searches to consumer health publications in PubMed.

The Information Rx Project educates and assists physicians in prescribing health information to their patients through MedlinePlus. Visit the Information Rx Tool Kit to learn more about the outreach activities designed specifically for health sciences libraries or any library that provides health information to the public.

Find a library that can help you with health information.

When you need help finding journal articles, starting your research, or finding additional resources: Ask your public library to assist you, or call on a health library in your area. Your public library may not have many books and journals about health, but your librarian will have access to important indexes and lists of health materials, and can borrow the items you need from a medical library. Usually your public library will get information for you without charge.

The 5413 members of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) provide a variety of services to health professionals and, in many cases, the public. Services include interlibrary loan (see more about Loansome Doc below); answering reference questions; and performing computerized or manual bibliographic searches. Health libraries often charge a fee for photocopies or services.

Order articles with Loansome Doc.

Loansome Doc is a service that goes hand in hand with PubMed so that you can obtain copies of articles from a library.

Find training materials, a class to take, or someone to teach a class for your organization.

Our librarians teach PubMed, Internet resources, and other library technology classes and demonstrations. The focus of our training is on health professionals or organizations that serve rural, minority, inner-city, or underserved populations, consumer health, and public health.

Find helpful health resources on the World Wide Web

Your health care provider has the best understanding of your particular state of health. The consumer who wants to find further health information has lots of options on the World Wide Web. The Web gives access to a wealth of health information. But check the source! Who put that information up on the Web? Non-profit organizations with a mission to share information (like the American Cancer Society) usually have good websites. Universities often have excellent websites. Be aware that websites which advertise products should be read with great care.
