  • Records of Controversies, 1867 - 1879
    173 multi-page documents have been digitized from this series. These mostly manuscript records include letters and other documents bearing on such controversies as claims for Indian depredations, the December 29, 1890 tragedy at Wounded Knee, the distribution of supplies, an inspection of the agency by a special inspector from the Department of Interior, a fire, a lawsuit, alleged padding of the payroll, an unpopular school superintendent, the return of part of the reservation to the public domain, and other events.   • Kern-Clifton Roll of Cherokee Freedmen, January 16, 1867
    1 multi-page document from this series has been digitized. The digitized document is a census of freedmen of the Cherokee Nation and their descendants. The census was taken by the Cherokee Freedmen Commission composed of William Clifton, William Tompson, and Robert H. Kern, and lists the number, name, sex, age, and district of authenticated freedmen and their descendants. There is also a supplemental list of individuals whose names appear on the rejected list submitted by the Cherokee Freedmen Commission, and held by the Indian Office to be entitled to share in the distribution of funds belonging to the Freedmen of the Cherokee Nation.   • Alexander Gardner Portraits of Tribal Delegations to the Federal Government, 1872 and Portraits of Indians from Southeastern Idaho Reservations, 1897
    A number of photographs have been digitized from the Alexander Gardner Portraits series. 183 photographs have been digitized from Tribal Delegation series. Portraits of members of several Indian delegations were taken in Washington, DC, by Gardner, a Civil photographer and one-time partner of Mathew Brady. 148 photographs have been digitized from the Southeastern Idaho reservations series. These photographs consists of studio portraits of largely unidentified Indian adults and children dressed in Western clothes and native costume. These materials are held by NARA's Still Picture Records (College Park, MD).

  • Wallace Roll of Cherokee Freedmen in Indian Territory, 1890
    1 multi-page document from this series has been digitized. The digitized document is a schedule of names of Cherokee freedmen created by Special Agent John W. Wallace. Individuals on the schedule were entitled to share with the Shawnee and Delaware in the per capita distribution of $75,000, appropriated by Congress in October 1888, and issued under the supervision of his office. These materials are held by NARA's Old Military and Civilian Records (Washington, DC).

  • Applications for Enrollment in the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898 - 1914
    16,683 items have been digitized from this series. The digital copies are attached to 64,177 item descriptions, i.e., the same image may be attached to multiple item descriptions. This series contains the original applications for tribal enrollments under the act of June 28, 1898, as well as supporting documents such as birth and death affidavits, marriage licenses, transcripts of testimony taken by the Commission, correspondence relating to the status of the application, and decisions and orders of the Commission.

    Commonly called the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes, the Dawes Commission was appointed by President Grover Cleveland in 1893 to negotiate with the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole tribes. In return for abolishing their tribal governments and recognizing state and Federal laws, tribe members were allotted a share of common property. These materials are held by NARA's Southwest Region (Fort Worth, TX).

  • Final Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory, 1898 - 1914
    1 multi-page document concerning the Final Rolls of the Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory has been digitized. The document lists the names of the individuals who were allowed on the tribal rolls by the Dawes Commission. The rolls are arranged by tribe and thereunder by category (i.e. Cherokee by Blood, Cherokee Minor, Cherokee Freedmen, etc.). The final rolls can be searched to discover the enrollee's name, sex, blood degree, and census card number. The census card may provide additional genealogical information. The majority of the records concern the overall operations of the Albuquerque Indian School and, to a lesser extent, the smaller Pueblo day schools that were under its jurisdiction until 1911. Those day schools were established in or near the New Mexico pueblos of Acoma, Isleta, Laguna, San Felipe, Sandia, Santa Ana, and Zuni.   • Annual Report of the Sacramento Area Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), 1936 - 1937
    1 multi-page document from this series has been digitized. The digitized report to BIA Commissioner John Collier, covering two fiscal years after the passage of the Indian Reorganization Act, reflects the viewpoint of an Agency Superintendent who wished to "liquidate the Indian Service" and may be seen as anticipating the Federal tribal termination policy of the 1950 - 1960 period. The report also gives an overall view of the lives of many northern and central California Indian groups, including those living on a number of rancherias. This series includes the files of about 100 other people who applied for a pension after having served thirty days "in any Indian war or campaign, or ... in the zone of active Indian hostilities from January 1, 1817, to December 31, 1898." Files typically include an application and depositions attesting to the men's service as scouts for the U.S. Army. This information may be used in conjunction with National Archives Microfilm Publication M233, Register of Enlistment's in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914, rolls 70 and 71 to locate the enlistment register entry for each man. The series contains general correspondence files, studies, reports, and lectures concerning Native American arts and crafts. Although the majority of this collection relates to the Cherokee Nation, there are some holdings which are associated with Native American Nations from across the country.   • Selected Photographs Relating to the Flathead Irrigation Project and the Wind River Agency
    89 photographs from these series have been digitized. Images included in the Wind River Agency series document a wide variety of activities at the reservation, including ranching and agriculture, agency staff and buildings, Indian dwellings, gatherings at the agency, and school and church activities. The digitized images also document investigations and construction on various units of the Flathead Irrigation Project which was initiated to determine rights and distribute water originating on the Flathead Indian Agency in Montana to both tribal and non-tribal land.   • Photographic Negatives of Native American Delegations and Archaeology of the Southwestern United States, 1879 - 1907
    315 photographs have been digitized from these two series. 274 photographs have been digitized from the Photographic Negatives of Native American Delegations and Archaeology of the Southwestern United States, 1879 - 1907. This series consists of original glass plate negatives collected by the Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. Several of the photographs are identified by the names of the anthropologists on whose trips they were made, including William H. Holmes, James Mooney, R.G. Fuller, F.K. Vreeland, David I. Bushnell, Jesse W. Fewkes, and brothers Cosmos and Victor Mindeleff. Additionally, some of the photographs are identified as having been taken by Delancey Gill, who worked as a photographer for the Smithsonian Institution. 41 photographs have been digitized from the series Photographic Negatives and Prints of Native Americans and Archaeology of the Southwestern United States, 1879 - 1894 from the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology. The entire series consists of original glass plate negatives and modern copy prints of individual Native Americans and their delegations to Washington, DC; and cliff dwellings and pueblos of the Southwestern United States, including Mummy Cave in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, and the Spruce Tree House in Mesa Verde, Colorado. These materials are held by the Still Picture Records (College Park, MD).
