Self-Service Copying at the National Archives Building, Washington, D.C. and the National Archives at College Park, Maryland
NARA Equipment
Paper to paper copies of many textual and certain audiovisual records
can be made on self-service electrostatic copiers, commonly available
in research rooms in both buildings, at a cost of 15 cents per page.
Microfilm or microfiche to paper copies, via microform reader-printers, are 30 cents per page.
In addition to these standard black-and-white electrostic copying
devices, resources in the Still Picture Research Room at College Park
include color electrostatic copiers (99 cents per page).
In the Cartographic and Architectural Research Room at College Park,
use of oversize electrostatic copiers is restricted to NARA staff, but
researchers may arrange same-day, cash-and-carry copying of a limited
number of items at $2.70 per foot per item.
In the Motion Picture, Sound, and Video Research Room at College Park,
researchers may rent the use of a dubbing station. For details,
consult the Motion Picture, Sound, and Video Research Room
orientation
handout, also obtainable through Fax-on-Demand.
Before copying records in any research room, researchers must show a
staff member the original material that they wish to duplicate.
*Preservation priorities may place certain kinds of fragile,
vulnerable, bound, or oversize items off-limits to researcher
copying.
*Legal conditions may also limit self-service options. For example,
at College Park, copyrighted newsreels under the custody of the
Motion Picture, Sound, and Video unit, and Nixon White House
Tapes under the custody of the Nixon Presidential Materials
Staff, may not be copied.
Researcher Equipment
Researchers may use their own personal computers (laptops, notebooks,
etc.), approved scanners, typewriters, tape recorders, tape decks,
cameras (we provide copy stands for small format cameras only), and other equipment in research rooms, but cases, bags,
boxes, and other enclosures must remain in lockers.
Audio cassettes, and flat-bed scanners without automatic document feed, are among the
equipment types allowed in research rooms. Auto-feed or hand-held scanners, and personal
copiers, are not
permitted.
