Bug-borne Disease Research: USA

Bugs spread many infectious diseases around the world. In the United States, ticks have long been associated with illnesses such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Mosquitoes spread West Nile disease and other encephalitis viruses, and fleas continue to transmit the occasional case of bubonic plague.

Bug-borne diseases continue to emerge in the United States, where West Nile virus first appeared in 1999 and new tick-borne diseases continue to be described. NIAID conducts research to help diagnose, prevent and treat bug-borne illnesses, and this Web resource provides an overview of the work conducted or funded by NIAID.
