Phase I: "Implementation of the International Coral
Reef Initiative in Mexico" provides an overview of
Mexican coral reefs and legislation affecting coral reef ecosystems.
It provides an extensive bibliography of research and activities on
Mexican reefs.
Phase II: "Overview of Existing Methodologies for the
Assessment of Coral Reefs" reviews general
methodologies for assessing and monitoring coral reefs, with a
discussion of techniques currently being used for coral assessment
in Mexico.
Phase III: U.S.-MEXICO BILATERAL CORAL REEF WORKSHOP: The
Workshop: "Status of the Coral Reefs of Mexico and the U.S.
Gulf of Mexico: Assessment, management and conservation"
was held in Mexico, April 29 to May 2, 1998. This workshop is part
of the regional implementation of the International Coral Reef
Initiative (ICRI), and was funded and organized by the Office of
Protected Resources in
cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, the Mexican Institute of
Investigation and Advanced Studies, and Amigos de Sian Ka’an, a
Mexican environmental NGO. The workshop was attended by 30 Mexican
coral reef researchers and managers, as well as 12 U.S. experts and
several other researchers from countries in the region. The meeting
was one of the first opportunities for Mexican scientists and
protected area managers to come together to explore options for the
monitoring and conservation of Mexican reefs. The results of Phases
I and II, along with the workshop proceedings have been published in
a CD-ROM format to make searching and retrieving specific
