Sites That Address Specific Cancers

American Cancer Society (ACS)
The ACS is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization. Its Web site and the ACS free phone line provide information on cancer treatment, early detection, and prevention, as well as cancer statistics and information on a variety of services available to cancer patients and their families.

healthfinder®
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' healthfinder® is a free gateway to reliable consumer health information. It links to online publications, clearinghouses, databases, Web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as to government agencies and nonprofit organizations that produce reliable information for the public.

Lance Armstrong Foundation
The Lance Armstrong Foundation is a registered nonprofit organization. Its Web site includes information on a broad range of cancer topics, including risk factors, treatment options, clinical trials, and survivorship, as well as an extensive collection of links to cancer-related resources.

MedlinePlus: Cancers Topics
This is a cancer-specific section of MedlinePlus, an online service of the National Library of Medicine. MedlinePlus gives access to medical literature and other health information and has numerous links to other sites.

NIHSeniorHealth.gov
This Web site makes aging-related health information easily accessible for people seeking reliable, easy-to-understand online health information. It was developed by the National Institute on Aging and the National Library of Medicine, with information from the NCI and other components of the NIH. Topics include breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers.

OHSU Pituitary
This site focuses on pituitary tumors and other pituitary disorders and has background facts as well as information on diagnosis and treatment. The site is from the OHSU Pituitary Unit of the Oregon Health and Science University, an NCI-designated cancer center.

OncoLink
OncoLink, from the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, presents cancer information for patients and health care professionals. It also links to more than 50 journal and newsletter Web sites.

Oncology Tools
This U.S. Food and Drug Administration site contains information on cancer and approved cancer drugs. It includes summaries on different types of cancer, regulatory information, and other cancer-related resources.

People Living With Cancer
This Web site for patients, their families, and friends is provided by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The site has an overview of cancer as well as detailed information on many types of cancer. It also gives access to ASCO resources, including treatment guidelines and research abstracts from annual ASCO meetings.

Clinical Practice Guidelines
This section of the Web site for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality offers agency-supported clinical practice guidelines as well as guidelines on other topics.

National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)
NCCN is a not-for-profit alliance of 19 major U.S. cancer centers. Its Web site includes the extensive "NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology" (free, online registration is required) and the NCCN/American Cancer Society "Treatment Guidelines for Patients." Some of the treatment guidelines are also available in Spanish.

National Guideline Clearinghouse
This site contains evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. It is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in partnership with the American Medical Association and the American Association of Health Plans.

National Marrow Donor Program
The National Marrow Donor Program was created to improve the effectiveness of the search for bone marrow donors. It has a registry of potential bone marrow donors and provides free information on bone marrow transplantation, peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, and unrelated-donor stem cell transplantation including the use of umbilical cord blood.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

About Herbs, Botanicals & Other Products
This site, from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, presents evidence-based information for oncologists and health care professionals on herbs, botanicals, vitamins, and other supplements. It includes a clinical summary for each agent, as well as details about constituents, adverse effects, interactions, and potential benefits or problems.

Integrative Therapies Program for Children with Cancer
This site provides information on pediatric cancers and complementary/alternative therapies. The Integrative Therapies Program for Children with Cancer is in the Division of Pediatric Oncology at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
NCCAM, at the National Institutes of Health, facilitates and supports basic and applied research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities. It sponsors training for researchers and disseminates information about CAM therapies to practitioners and to the public.

Genetics

DOE HGP Genomics Primers
This U.S. Department of Energy site offers online genetics publications, including "Genomics and Its Impact on Medicine and Society." This publication covers genetics basics, a history of the Human Genome Project (HGP), anticipated benefits of genetic research, societal concerns, and other topics; a large dictionary of genetic terms is provided.

National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)
NHGRI is a component of the National Institutes of Health. Its Web site provides information on the Human Genome Project, as well as numerous links to genome mapping and sequence databases and genome centers.

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
This database of human genes and genetic disorders is provided by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a division of the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health.

Mammography: Search for a Certified Facility
Part of the larger U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) site, this list of FDA-certified mammography facilities can be searched by ZIP Code or state. The list is updated weekly.

Coping with Cancer/Support Information

Oral Health, Cancer Care, and You
This site has information from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) on preventing and managing oral complications of cancer treatment. NIDCR is a component of the National Institutes of Health.

Outlook: Life Beyond Childhood Cancer
The Outlook Web site is an information resource for childhood cancer survivors and their families. Finances, health concerns, and school and job issues are covered. The site was developed in part by the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Cancer Literature

ASCO: Abstracts
The American Society of Clinical Oncology's (ASCO's) 2003 Program/Proceedings abstracts are now available to ASCO Members and the public. A searchable archive of abstracts from the 1995-2002 Annual Meetings is also available.

LinkOut
This site, from the National Library of Medicine's National Center for Biotechnology Information, links to more than 2000 journals for which links to the full text have been provided to PubMed. User registration, a subscription fee, or some other type of fee may be required to access the full text of articles for some journals.

NLM Gateway
NLM Gateway allows users to search online in multiple retrieval systems at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches MEDLINE/PubMed, TOXLINE Special, LocatorPlus, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, DIRLINE, Genetics Home Reference, Meeting Abstracts, HSRProj, OMIM, and HSDB.

ClinicalTrials.gov provides regularly updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research in human volunteers. A service of the National Institutes of Health developed by the National Library of Medicine.

EmergingMed.com
EmergingMed.com is a free and confidential cancer clinical trial matching and referral service.

Cancer Statistics

American Cancer Society (ACS): Statistics
This resource is part of the main ACS Web site. It offers statistics on cancer occurrence, including the number of deaths and cases, and how long people survive after diagnosis.

CDC: National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR)
Established by Congress in 1992, NPCR supports efforts by states and territories of the United States to initiate and improve cancer registries and to establish a computerized reporting and data-processing system. The site includes state and national cancer data.

Research Resources

Large Granular Lymphocyte (LGL) Leukemia Registry
This national registry is part of the Hematologic Malignancies Program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. It collects, manages, and analyzes information on people with LGL leukemia. It also maintains a bank of blood and tissue samples from people with the disease.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
This site contains information from the offices and centers of the AHRQ, a Public Health Service agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The site has health-related news and resources, plus information for consumers and a catalog of information products.

American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)
AACR is a scientific society of laboratory and clinical cancer researchers. Its Web site contains information on AACR membership, meetings, journals, and conferences.

American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)
ASCO is a professional organization of health-care practitioners who have a predominant interest in oncology. Its Web site has cancer information for patients, including information on treatment, support groups, and other resources. The information for health professionals includes ASCO policies, meetings, and publications.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
CDC's Web site provides publications, travelers' health information, statistics, and training, employment, and other information. CDC, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Department of Health and Human Services
The Department of Health and Human Services is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Authorized by Congress to enforce the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and several other public health laws, the FDA monitors the manufacture, import, transport, storage, and sale of $1 trillion worth of goods annually.

National Center for Biotechnology Information
This site, for a division of the National Library of Medicine, includes GenBank, the National Institutes of Health genetic sequence database, as well as other sources of biomedical information.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
NIEHS, one of the institutes of the National Institutes of Health, studies human health and disease as they relate to environmental factors, individual susceptibility, and age.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
NIH is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It consists of 25 institutes and centers that conduct medical research for the Federal Government.

National Toxicology Program (NTP)
NTP is an interagency program headquartered at the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Its Web site includes information about chemicals and agents with the potential for adversely impacting public health.

National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC)
This Web site is sponsored by the Office on Women's Health, in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It provides a broad array of reliable, commercial-free health publications and referrals to health-related organizations for women. Some of this information is available in Spanish.

Office of Minority Health (OMH)
OMH was created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Its Web site contains information on a variety of subjects that affect the health of racial and ethnic populations, including cancer.
