TVA To Close Highway 256 Across Blue Ridge Dam

June 23, 2004

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. -- TVA will close County Road 256 across Blue Ridge Dam from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through the end of July, when construction at the dam is expected to be completed.

The road will be closed beginning Wednesday, June 23, as a safety precaution to protect motorists and construction workers. Many motorists using the road across the dam have been exceeding the speed limit in the construction area.

TVA closed the road for more than a year during construction of a tunnel through the dam and reopened it May 28. The new tunnel will be used to move water from the reservoir to the river below the dam.

The road across the dam will be open to traffic at night and on weekends. It will also be open July 2-5 to accommodate traffic during the Fourth of July weekend. Alternate routes are available to motorists.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood control, navigation, water quality and recreation.
