TVA Campgrounds Open for 2004 Season

Mar. 31, 2004

Seven seasonal TVA campgrounds on reservoirs throughout the Tennessee Valley are opening for the 2004 recreation season on a staggered schedule that extends through the middle of May.

Four other campgrounds and all TVA day-use recreation areas remain open throughout the year. TVA operates about 100 public recreation areas throughout the Valley, including day-use areas, boat ramps and 11 campgrounds.

TVA campgrounds provide recreation opportunities to people interested in boating, fishing, and other water-based activities. Campers will find new amenities at some campgrounds, including a sanitary dump station at Douglas Tailwater, a handicap accessible overlook access trail at Foster Falls, and a handicap accessible toilet building at the recently completed Melton Hill Dam fishing berm.

Camping fees have been increased by $2 over last year’s fees. Fees for sites without water and electric hookups will be $14 a day, and fees for sites with hookups will be $18 a day. TVA-managed day-use areas and boat launch ramps have no fees.

“This modest fee increase will help offset the cost of campground operations and bring our rates more in line with state, federal and commercial campgrounds throughout the region,” said TVA Resource Stewardship Vice President Bridgette K. Ellis.

Holders of Golden Age and Golden Access Passports receive a 50 percent discount on camping fees. Passports are available from TVA’s seven watershed offices and at most other federally operated recreation areas.

TVA also has picnic pavilions available at selected sites. Information on how to reserve and use the picnic pavilions is available by calling 866-494-7186 (toll free).
