Other Sources of Drug Abuse Information

The Federal Government operates many clearinghouses and information centers that provide assistance to health professionals, educators, researchers, and the public. To respond to the specific needs of NIDA Infofax callers, the following is a list of agencies that address drug abuse-related issues. These services distribute publications, provide referrals, and answer simple to complex inquiries. Many offer toll-free numbers, mailing and Internet addresses, foreign language-specific lines, and fax numbers. Unless otherwise noted, services can be reached by phone in the continental United States during Eastern Standard Time.

    Provides adolescent and family counseling for drug and alcohol problems, helps locate treatment facilities for callers, and faxes and mails printed materials. Al-Anon, Alcoholics Anonymous, and Narcotics Anonymous referrals are made. Spanish-speaking representatives are available by appointment. Both taped information and operator assistance. 24 hours, 7 days a week.

    Disseminates free and priced brochures, books, videos, fact sheets, and other materials by mail. Free items are limited to five per call. Catalog available. Other services include subject searches and provision of statistics. Operates the Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (RADAR), a nationwide linkage of alcohol and other drug information centers. Maintains a library open to the public. Operator assistance and taped information available in both English and Spanish. M-F, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.


  3. Wally Bear Hotline (for children)

    Major federal resource center that includes a selection of titles and videos related to drug abuse. This service has over 3 million items available.     Funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the U.S. Department of Justice, this service disseminates free and priced statistical data on drug-related crime by mail and fax (extra cost for faxing, copying, and rush handling). Free items are limited to five per call. Operator assistance. M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

    Trained specialists provide technical guidance in developing and evaluating programs and policies regarding alcohol and drug abuse in the workplace. Funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Workplace Helpline is designed for decision makers in business, union organizations, and community-based, anti-drug groups. Consultation is provided in areas including policy development, supervisor training, employee education, employee assistance programs, and drug testing. All publications are free. Operator assistance. Confidential messages may be left at other times; a return call within one business day. M-F, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Have a prevention news list serve to enhance communication among professionals who work in the field of HIV prevention, and three resource centers (Rockville, Md., and Atlanta, Ga., Baltimore, MD & John Hopkins Univ) that are open by appointment, M-F, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Operator assistance.
