Urban and Community Forestry

What Is the Urban Forest?
Look around your home or neighborhood and you'll notice a valuable but often unappreciated natural resource—the urban forest. This forest includes street trees, yard trees, park trees, forest lands, and associated natural resources that exist in and around a community or urban area.

Benefits of Urban Trees
Conserving the urban forest is important, because trees make our communities more livable by the many economic and environmental benefits they provide. A protective tree canopy can help to reduce storm water run off and soil erosion. Trees modify our climate by providing shade in summer and windbreaks in winter, and can reduce the amount of energy needed to cool and heat buildings. By reducing energy consumption, producing oxygen, and filtering dust, trees help to maintain the quality of the air in the environment.
