The vision for urban and community forestry in the Northeastern
Area has remained essentially constant since 1990, "…to achieve
community sustainability and an enhanced quality of life through
stewardship of urban and community forests and related natural
resources." Implied in this statement is full participation
by all those who affect or are affected by decisions relating
to natural resources and their management in urban areas. This
reflects a fundamental shift in responsibility from government
to individual citizens to accept a key role for the stewardship
of critical natural systems that sustain our collective well-being.
