The Economic Action Program supports conservation and sustainable use of forests and related natural resources. Working cooperatively with State forestry agencies and other partners, programs help rural and urban residents generate diverse, sustainable economic opportunities in their communities.

The Economic Action Program has several components:

Rural Development Through Forestry helps communities, nonprofit groups, and businesses develop new, sustainable economic activities based on forests and related resources.

Economic Recovery helps communities dependent upon national forests diversify and strengthen their economy when changes in Federal land management policies cause economic hardship.

Forest Products Conservation and Recycling promotes using wood efficiently by reducing waste, recycling, and generating energy from wood waste. Modern manufacturing technologies can cut waste by as much as 10 percent.

The Wood In Transportation Program promotes wood for projects such as bridges, erosion control, guardrails, and sound barriers. Wood resists road salt, has excellent engineering properties, comes from a renewable resource—and creates an attractive, durable product.

The Wood Education Resource Center supports managerial and technical innovation to keep businesses competitive. It provides state-of-the-art training, technology transfer, networking opportunities, applied research, and information.
