TVA Asks for Public Opinion on Possible Construction of Wind Turbines

November 29 , 2001

MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. — TVA is asking interested citizens to offer their opinions and ideas on a proposal to build a wind park and energy storage plant near Mountain City. A public meeting on the topic will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 3, at the Johnson County Courthouse, 222 W. Main St., Mountain City.

As part of its program to develop renewable energy sources, TVA is exploring Stone Mountain as one of several sites suitable for the construction of 14 wind turbines. The Stone Mountain proposal would provide a minimum of 20 megawatts of additional wind power for TVA’s Green Power Switch® program, which is a renewable energy initiative that offers Tennessee Valley consumers a choice in the type of power they buy. Wind turbine energy adds to the existing power mix and provides a choice for consumers seeking a cleaner technology solution that creates no air pollution and helps sustain the Valley’s resources for future generations.

“Wind power will enable us to better meet the needs of TVA customers throughout the Valley by continuing to provide those consumers with more value and choice to buy their energy from renewable sources of electricity generation,” said TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. “Twenty megawatts of wind power is enough to electrify 3,400 homes with clean, renewable electricity.”

TVA currently operates three wind turbines on top of Buffalo Mountain in Anderson County near Oliver Springs, Tennessee.

TVA experts will make a presentation on the possibility of building an energy storage plant near the proposed wind park site that would be used to store electricity during periods of low demand and release it during periods of high electricity demand. They will also present information on the Stone Mountain wind park proposal that explains the types of turbines available and the environmental impacts associated with them.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
