NEW HHS ASSISTANT SECRETARY
FOR ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT IS NAMED

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today named Ed Sontag, Ed.D., to serve as Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management, a new position at the department. Before assuming this role, Dr. Sontag had served since February as Deputy Chief of Staff for Management and Operations.

In the new position, Dr. Sontag will oversee human resources and grants management operations at HHS.

Before accepting his appointment at HHS, Dr. Sontag served as an advisor to Governor Thompson in Wisconsin, where his primary focus was educational issues ranging from K-12 education and post-secondary and higher education. Dr. Sontag was also a tenured professor at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.

"Ed Sontag brings a wealth of experience that will serve HHS well," Secretary Thompson said. "He will have a special responsibility to help bring about the improvements and effectiveness we can achieve by structuring HHS as a united department."

The new structure is also aimed to help support the President's Management Agenda at HHS, Secretary Thompson said.

Dr. Sontag's professional career has included being a classroom teacher of students with disabilities, a principal, a director of special education for a state department of education, the Director of Special Education for the U.S. Department of Education, and a university professor
