The Inspectors General community is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Inspector General Act, which was
signed into law on October 12, 1978. To commemorate this important milestone, during the coming year we will
highlight the history of the TVA Inspector General's office, including our accomplishments and significant
related events which have taken place since the office was created by the TVA Board during 1985.

Although the Inspector General Act, which created the modern day version of the Inspector General within the
federal government, is only 25 years old, the Inspector General concept goes back more than 225 years.
Our predecessor and model was the inspector general in the military who was responsible for providing an
independent review of the combat readiness of the Continental Army during the infancy of our Republic.
We have a strong tradition in America of insisting on accountability and transparency for both the military and
our civil government through the inspections of an independent professional and his or her staff. Today
there are 29 Inspectors General who have been appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and charged
with conducting non-partisan audits, inspections, and investigations to promote efficiency and effectiveness
and to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse in federal agencies. An additional 28 Inspectors General
are appointed by their agencies' heads to conduct audits and investigations with the same purposes in the federal
agencies they serve.
The Inspector General’s Office at TVA is proud to be a part of this history and we look forward to continuing
to promote excellence at TVA over the next 25 years. If you would like to know more about our work or
report concerns you may have about TVA, please call our fraud hotline and let us hear
from you.
Sincerely,
