The
objective of this
portfolio is to provide one-stop, on-line access to information
and
services. The portfolio
has started to meet its objectives but much work remains
to be done. GovBenefits.gov has
compiled most government benefit programs on-line so citizens
can easily determine
their eligibility for benefit programs. This eligibility
tool is starting to be “franchised” on specific
benefit topics like seniors, loans, and disabilities.
The portfolio is reusing this established tool and multiplying
its impact for the citizen. 77% of government site users
have gotten tourism and recreation information from government
web sites (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 4/02).
Recreation.gov has
merged recreation data from across the government into
an easy to use site. It also provides the
same data to private sector sites that pick subsets for
their specific topic web site - “franchising” much
like GovBenefits.gov above. Finally, Free File is using
a private-public partnership to deliver Internet tax
filing.
70% of those who filed their taxes on-line say have saved
time and about half say they saved more than an hour
(Pew).
