INTERNSHIP for NATIVE STUDENT TRAINING & EDUCATION PROGRAM
INSTEP
A collaborative program between the
University of Alaska Anchorage
(UAA), Native Student Services, Alaska Native Studies
and the Department of the Interior, INSTEP is a new program developed to provide Alaska
Native and American Indian students in Alaska with internships in federal government
agencies. The program combined a ten-week work experience with a six-credit course
taught at UAA.
The primary objective of INSTEP is to provide
professional experience within a federal agency to Alaska Native and American Indian
students in Alaska, giving the interns an inside view of government operations and
responsibilities toward management of federal resources. This first year had seven
students recruited for the program by Native Student Services. The interns were
matched to agencies based on the agency's needs consistent with the student's interests,
academic background, and future career goals. The program is designed to increase
the recruitment and hiring of Alaska Natives and American Indians in Alaska.
The Minerals Management Service, Alaska OCS Office located in Anchorage, Alaska hosted two
INSTEP students for the summer of 2000. Each student worked with an assigned
supervisor performing specific tasks. They were introduced to the variety of
components that make up a government office, and also to the many facets, technical,
scientific, and administrative needed to effectively manage the Alaskan Outer Continental
Shelf (OCS).
