Flight-Deck Communication
|
By Dan Steber |
We have not received a story on this incident,
but we wanted to point out a few facts. The greenshirt is part of the
flight-deck crew. He is the topside petty officer and is seen waving his
hand in a circular motion. The flight deck can be noisy, so hand signals
are used to communicate. If you look closely, you'll notice the shuttle is not in place.
An aircraft's launch bar is inserted into the shuttle, so the aircraft can
be catapulted off the deck. This Sailor simply is signaling for
the shuttle to be retracted. The young aviator in the T-45 sees the
greenshirt's signal and thinks the flight-deck crewman wants power. The aircraft moves forward, hits the
crewman, and stops just off screen. This misinterpreted signal ends with the
Sailor on the deck with scrapes, bruises and broken bones. |
