The Planning and Evaluation Service (PES)...

  • coordinates strategic planning and program performance reporting across the Department of Education;
  • conducts independent evaluations of the major federal education programs; and
  • coordinates the Department's role in international education activities

About Us

PES is organized to make this possible with several working units organized around mandated activities

  • Through our strategic planning activities, we support the Department in framing program goals, define indicators of success, and promote sound budget decisions;
  • Our evaluation studies measure the performance of Department programs to encourage high-quality educational services for the American public, strengthen guidance for programs, identify effective practices, and promote appropriate legislative change in the federal government; and
  • Our international activities help ensure that the Department has access to the best information and ideas on educational programs from around the world.

Strategic Planning

Performance-based management makes government work for people. The Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 helps Federal agencies shape policies and more wisely use resources. The Planning and Evaluation Service (PES) supports the Department of Education's use of strategic planning as a management tool based on measurable goals and objectives.

Evaluation

The Planning and Evaluation Service evaluates the performance of selected Department of Education programs and services to determine their effectiveness, efficiency, and equity. It is through evaluation studies that PES documents the progress and performance of goals established in the planning process. Evaluation studies, many of which are congressionally mandated, provide critical information to policymakers.

International Affairs

The International Affairs staff serves as a source of information on international education matters relevant to U.S. education, helps to develop and maintain cooperation with other nations in the field of education, and coordinates the Department's participation in international organizations, studies, and events.

Critical Topics in Education

A significant audience for Planning and Evaluation Service (PES) materials is policymakers, and much of this Web site is organized around providing information to men and women who think in terms of legislation, authorization, appropriation, rulemaking, grant writing, and other government functions. Of equal importance is the information that will help our schools to improve over time.

Publications and Resources

The Planning and Evaluation Service gathers and distributes a wide range of strategic planning and evaluation information, and provides leadership for a wide range of international education exchanges and other activities.
