Evaluation

The Planning and Evaluation Service evaluates the performance of selected Department of Education programs and services to determine their effectiveness, efficiency, and equity. It is through evaluation studies that PES documents the progress and performance of goals established in the planning process. Evaluation studies, many of which are congressionally mandated, provide critical information to policymakers.

To assess the performance of certain programs, studies focus on performance-based questions:

  • What are the program outcomes and impacts on participants?
  • Who participates? What services are provided? How do the effects of the program vary across participants?
  • How well is the program managed? How can it be improved?

Library Resources

The Planning and Evaluation Service's Library Resources collection contains some of our older collections of materials and references, as well as pointers to information of a more timeless quality from other sources.

This page presents the purposes, designs, and results of evaluation projects supported by PES and other ED offices. You'll find abstracts, highlights, and in some cases full reports from evaluation projects. Information on practices and methodology in education evaluation, plus survey instruments currently available to the public, are also available.
