About NARA Publications

A vast array of publications is available from the National Archives. They include:

  • guides and indexes to collections in specific areas
  • catalogs of microfilmed records
  • special archival publications that will be useful to scholars, archivists, historians, researchers, and educators

Also available are general interest books about NARA and its holdings that will appeal to anyone with an interest in United States history. In general the authors and compilers of these works are archivists and other experts on the NARA staff.

NARA publishes both free and fee publications.

Fee Publications

On this web site, some publications are referred to as fee publications and have a price noted or are marked with a dollar sign ($). Fee publications are more comprehensive works (and microfilm publications) which Congress has authorized the National Archives Trust Fund to produce and sell on a cost recovery basis. Records and finding aids that would otherwise be usable only on site at the National Archives are then more widely available. [Note: A finding aid is a publication that assists researchers in locating the records they need amid the vast resources of the National Archives.]

Free Publications

Free publications typically provide to the public essential general information about the National Archives and Records Administration and its holdings. Free publications are usually less comprehensive products which are produced and distributed using tax dollars.
