Publications

  • Free Publications

  • NARA's free publications typically provide essential general information about NARA and its holdings. Free publications are usually less comprehensive products, which are produced and distributed using tax dollars.

  • Fee Publications

  • Fee publications have a price noted or are marked with a dollar sign ($). Fee publications are microfilm publications and more comprehensive works. Congress authorizes the National Archives Trust Fund to produce and sell these publications on a cost recovery basis.

Fee publications allow records and finding aids that would be usable only on site at the National Archives to be more widely available.

  • Catalogs of Publications & Products

  • Catalogs are compiled by NARA staff to facilitate access to NARA publications, microfilm, and other NARA products, such as posters and gifts.

  • General Information Leaflets (GILs)

  • GILs contain information about the facilities, services, and policies of NARA.

  • Finding Aids

  • Finding aids assist researchers in locating the records that will be most useful to them among the vast resources of the National Archives.

Finding aids include guides, inventories, reference information papers, special lists, and select audiovisual lists.

  • Genealogy Resources

  • Genealogy publications are helpful for family history research.

  • General Interest

  • These publications are of interest to the general public, including publications about NARA, facsimile publications, and Presidential materials.
