Office of Prevention, Education, and
Control
Description and Background
The NHLBI Office of Prevention, Education, and Control
(OPEC) coordinates the dissemination of research findings and scientific
consensus to health professionals, patients, and the public so that information
can be adapted for and integrated into health care practice and individual
health behavior. To accomplish its mission, OPEC has established health
education programs and initiatives that address high blood pressure, high blood
cholesterol, early warning signs of heart attack, asthma, obesity, and sleep
disorders. The four largest programs have coordinating committees to help plan,
implement, and evaluate program efforts in professional, patient, and public
education, and spread the programs' messages to a wide range of audiences.
