  • Federal Law Enforcement Officers, 2000

    Provides national data on Federal officers as of June 2000. The data is based on a census of Federal agencies employing personnel with arrest and firearms authority. Using agency classifications, the report presents the number of officers working in the areas of criminal investigation and enforcement, police patrol and response, noncriminal investigation and inspection, security and protection, court operations, and corrections, by agency and State. Data on gender and race of officers is also included.

    Highlights include the following:

  • About three-fifths of Federal officers were employed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (17,654), Bureau of Prisons (13,557), FBI (11,523), and U.S. Customs Service (10,522).
  • Nationwide, there were 31 Federal officers per 100,000 residents.
  • Women accounted for 14.4% of Federal officers in 2000. Minority representation was 30.5% in 2000, up from 29.2% in 1998.
