National Crime Victimization Survey, 1995: Preliminary Findings
Reports in a press release on the 1995 preliminary National Crime Victimization Survey
(NCVS) findings that crimes of nonfatal violence (rape, sexual assault, robbery, and assault)
and theft (pocket picking, purse snatching, burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft)
in the Nation declined by almost 7 percent in 1995, almost 3 million fewer offenses than
in 1994. Murders are not included in the NCVS because of the inability to interview victims,
but according to the FBI's preliminary 1995 Uniform Crime Reports, murder estimates fell 8%
from the 1994 level. About 39.6 million nonfatal crimes were measured by the NCVS for 1995,
compared to 42.4 million for 1994. The decline in nonfatal violent offense rates interrupted
a rising trend since the mid-1980's. The decrease in the rate of crimes of theft continued
a 20-year pattern of decreasing rates. 9/96 NCJ 162603
