Prosecutors in State Courts, 1994
This Bulletin presents findings from the 1994 National Survey of
Prosecutors, the most recent in a series of biennial sample
surveys of the Nation's 2,300 State court prosecutors. The
survey found that in 1994, State court prosecutors employed
about 65,000 attorneys, investigators, and support staff.
Almost 90% of the offices prosecuted domestic violence and child
abuse cases. Half the offices reported that a staff member
received a work-related threat or assault. More than half the
offices in large metropolitan areas had specialized units to
handle juvenile cases in adult criminal court. Other data from
the survey include the annual office budget for prosecutorial
functions, number of felony cases closed, and number of felony
convictions. New topic areas covered in this report include
juvenile cases waived to criminal court, the cross-designation
of prosecutors to litigate in Federal court, procedures for
handling civil actions against prosecutors and other
professional staff, and types of community involvement by
