State Court Organization 1993

This edition, the fourth guide to the Nation's courts sponsored by BJS and the third prepared by the National Center for State Courts, includes an examination of Federal courts, as well as charts that summarize each State court structure.

It describes five aspects of State court organization:

  1. trial courts (the role of grand juries, peremptory jury challenges, jury verdict rules)
  2. appellate courts (case selection, expedited procedures)
  3. governance of court systems (budgets, administration)
  4. judges and judicial selection (numbers of judges, mandatory judicial education)
  5. processing of criminal cases (felony definition, mandatory minimum, habitual offender sentencing provisions).
2/95, NCJ 148346

This report is one in a series. More recent editions may be available. A list of all in the series is provided on the publications page.
