2004 Proof Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar (2S5)

This program is limited to 500,000 coins across all four (4) product options.

Pre-issue pricing will be in effect from May 12, 2004 through June 11, 2004.

The Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar was designed by United States Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver. The obverse depicts Captains Lewis and Clark on a stream bank planning another day of exploration. Lewis is seen holding his rifle in one hand and his journal in the other. The reverse features two feathers to represent the many American Indian cultures touched by the Corps of Discovery. It also features an image of the original Jefferson Peace Medal presented to American Indian nations during the expedition on behalf of President Jefferson, surrounded by 17 stars representing the number of states in the Union in 1804.

The proof coin has a brilliant mirror-like finish. The term "proof" refers to a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with specially polished dies. Each coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images, seem to float above a mirror-like field. The coin is then placed in a protective capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case, accompanied by its own Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.

Metal composition of the coin is 90% silver and 10% copper. The coin's diameter is 1.5 inches and weighs 26.73 grams.

The proof commemorative silver dollar is United States legal tender and is backed by the United States Government for weight and content.

The United States Mint is proud to offer a limited-time pre-issue discount offer. Customers ordering Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollars by June 11, 2004, can take advantage of this special offer.
